Welcome to McKinley Elementary School! Built in 1916, we are one of the two oldest existing buildings in the San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD). The SLUSD is located in the suburban community of San Leandro, California, with the population of approximately 70,000 people. The city of San Leandro occupies fifteen square miles between the cities of Hayward and Oakland and is bordered on the west by San Francisco Bay and on the east by the foothills. Incorporated in 1872, San Leandro is one of the oldest cities in the San Francisco East Bay. It is primarily a middle class community with a balance of senior citizens and young people with families. In the early days the city was influenced by Ohlone Indians, the Portuguese and Spanish. In recent years, local economic development and the addition of low-income housing has greatly increased the economic, cultural and linguistic diversity in our city and schools.
