Read Across America was celebrated the week of March 2nd – 6th at McKinley School. Read Across America is sponsored by the National Education Association to promote a love for reading. In its eleventh year, Read Across America celebrates, this year, the 104th birthday of the late prolific children’s book author and illustrator, Dr. Seuss. Highlights of the event at McKinley were: · Guest Readers from the community, including, Mayor Tony Santos, Vice Mayor Bill Stephens, and Council Member Michael Gregory. From our school district, Superintendent Chris Lim, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Judith Cameron, and School Board President Mike Katz-Lacabe. From the East Bay Regional Parks Police, Officer Chris Spencer. From McKinley Staff, Cher Mott, Mari Ullrich, Vanessa Horeis, Carol Marcelino and McKinley School Alumni, Beatrice Tesorero. · Kindergarteners celebrated with breakfast of Green Eggs and Ham and read Dr. Seuss’ books all week. They participated in a survey to find the favorite book by Dr. Seuss. · First Grade rotated through centers where they made Green Eggs and Ham tic-tac-toe boards, created Cat in the Hat Cookies, designed One Fish, Two Fish Red Fish, Blue Fish aquariums from graham and colorful gold fish crackers, and a Cat in the Hat art project. · Third Grade surveyed all of the classes, K-5, to find out what Dr. Seuss book is McKinley School’s favorite. The bulletin board in the main hall graphs out the survey results.* The Third Grade also created a bulletin board in the main hall. Their topic is “Why I Love to Read.” Here are some of the answers… …You can read anywhere …I love to read because it’s a great escape. …You get more information and you get smarter. …It is a way to relax …It’s the key to growing up right and getting smarter each day. …It helps me learn more about animals, bugs, and history. …It’s very fun. *P.S. The book that got the most votes is, Green Eggs and Ham. |
