I am extremely pleased to be your child’s teacher this year. We spent the first two days getting to know one another and learning some of the classroom routines. I was happy to be able to already meet of few of you on the first day of school. Please feel free to stop by and chat, write me a note or give me a call at the school (618-4320). I would be happy to set up a time to talk. I look forward to being your partner in your child’s education this year. I have attached some forms for you to fill out so that I have contact information as well as information about your child to help me better meet his/her needs. Please return the bright pink forms to me as soon as possible. The teachers are currently conducting reading assessments to help us learn about your child’s reading strengths and areas of need. The assessment takes about 20 minutes. I have already asked some of your children to stay after school. I will ask a few more and finish the rest during the school day. We will finish by Thursday so that we can let you know whether your child is an early or late reader. We begin the regular school schedule on Monday Sept., 8. Homework packets will also begin then. They are sent home on Monday and collected the next Monday. That gives parents time on the week-end to help their children. If the homework is too hard or too easy, let me know, I can make some adjustments. I believe homework is a time for reviewing concepts, reading for pleasure and developing study skills. It’s helpful if your child has a quiet place to work without the distraction of TV. It is meant to take about 30 minutes per night. I have a small classroom library, however not large enough to cover the varied interests of all the children. Students are asked to keep books at their desks to read if they finish their work early, for Silent Reading time and for reading at home. The San Leandro Public Library has a beautiful children’s section and wonderful children’s librarians. Please take your child to check out books to bring to school and for recreational reading at home. The best way to become a proficient reader is to READ, READ, READ! Sincerely,
