Fourth Grade Standards-
Language Arts-Reading- As it is so important to read in all grades, we will continue to focus on reading as well as comprehending what we read. We will focus on using strategies to help us become better readers. It is important for your child to read for at LEAST 20 minutes EVERYDAY. It is helpful for child to read silently, orally, and also, to be read to. We will also be working on our writing skills. This year, we will be writing multiple paragraph compositions which will:
1. Provide an introductory paragraph.
2. Establish and support a central idea with a topic sentence
at or near the beginning of the first paragraph.
3. Include supporting paragraphs with simple facts, details, and
explanations.
4. Conclude with a paragraph that summarizes the points.
5. Use correct indention.
Math- This year students will be working on a daily activity called BOARDMATH, where we will cover each strand of arithmetic every day. This will give students many opportunities to work on concepts we may have covered already as well as new ones we will learn more about. This will be done for approximately 20 minutes each day. We will also be following the 4th grade pacing guide set by the school district. We will use our math books for these concepts. We will be starting the year off with PLACE VALUE. As students should have their addition and subtraction facts up through 10 memorized, please keep working on that. Math will become much easier if they get these facts to automaticity. Students should also be working hard to get multiplication facts up through 12 memorized! FLASH CARDS ARE GREAT!
Social Studies-In fourth grade, students will largely concentrate on CALIFORNIA. We will be working on learning about the different regions of California, California Indians, and California Missions. We will also learn to read maps and locate different landmarks using longitude and latitude. Many of the field trips we are planning for this year will somehow relate to our social studies work.
Science- This year we will we will be learning about the Life Sciences and what living things need to survive, Earth Sciences, and Physical Science.
STAR Testing will be in the end of April.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the end of November. We are not able to speak to you this evening about your child's progress. I will be happy to speak with parents before of after school or by appointment.

Our P.E. classes are on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please be sure your child is wearing suitable shoes and clothes.
PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD IS ON TIME TO SCHOOL! Late students miss important learning when they arrive after instruction has begun.
Please review your child's homework log and homework each evening. A responsibility contract is sent home every week on Fridays. If there are any homework, behavior, or classroom problems, there will be a check mark indicating the day and problem occurred. Please sign this so that your child can return it on Mondays.
I look forward to working cooperatively with you and your child. Thank you for your help and support at home to make this a productive learning year for your child!
