IDEAS FOR PARENTS THAT ENCOURAGE SCHOOL SUCCESS:You are as important as your child's teachers in their academic success! Support and motivate your child to do their best!
Make school important! Convey your love of education and insist on good attendance and punctuality.
Develop a "school checklist." Insure that your child leaves for school and comes home with everything that they need to complete their work.
Create a Study Routine. Set a time and quiet place for your children to work every day. Make sure to have all of the necessary study tools accessible. Allow study breaks every 20 minutes or so and provide healthful snacks.
Be available. Make sure you are available to help them study for tests and to answer questions that they may have.
Recognize learning styles. Not all children learn in the same way. Visual learners learn best from seeing, auditory learners learn best from hearing, and kinesthetic learners learn best from touching, doing, and moving. By identifying your child's learning styles, you can help them make progress faster! (Simple assessments are available in every good book store and on line.)
Praise Success and Progress. Shout "bravo" at every opportunity, whether for successes or small steps of progress!
Read, Read, Read! Read with your children or have them read to you every day. Make it fun by talking about what you have read!
Provide Learning Experiences. Expose your child to learning experiences. This can include visits to museums, travel, books, etc.
Encourage Independent Thinking. Allow your child to make mistakes and learn from their consequences.
Get Involved. Meet with your child's teacher, attend school events and help out at the school if you can.
Seek Help. If your child is doing poorly in school and you've tried everything that you can think of, don't hesitate to ask for help! Every failure lowers self-esteem and reduces their motivation to try. Don't wait to seek professional help for your child if necessary! It is their future that you are investing in!
