Hello!
I'm Kerrie (Skehan) Marshall and it has been an absolute privilege and pleasure to teach at McKinley School for 22 years. I love being a part of this learning community! Nothing equals the satisfaction that I feel when a youngster suddenly "gets" a concept or the satisfaction that comes from working closely with families to make sure that their children make great educational strides.
The second grade standards are rigorous and we study them with great zeal. The home-school connection is a major part of our overall success. To this end, we ask that parents read with their children for 20 minutes each night (it's great fun), practice counting money, and practice telling time.
In second grade, children have homework Monday-Thursday. They read each night, practice spelling, math and writing. The work is returned to school each day so that good study habits are developed and so that I can make sure that all students are completing their work correctly.
Our discipline includes Soul Shoppe, a program that teaches respect, responsibility, caring, and kindness. The method shows children how to talk out their problems. It teaches them that it's natural to feel angry or sad and shows them how to act on those feelings in an appropriate way. Consequences for children who choose not to follow the rules include warnings, time out, phone calls home, or visits to the principal. We strive to create a positive atmosphere in which children can blossom academically and socially.
