Dear Parents,
Welcome to the world of second grade in Room 12! Throughout the
year we will present a cohesive program that will help your child
meet the second grade standards. We look forward to a fun and
rewarding year with your child. Thank you for sending us such
great scholars! We are anxious to meet all of you at Back to School
Night, on Tuesday, September 11, 2007.
We would like your child's experience in second grade to be enjoyable
and successful. We thought it might be helpful to outline a few
aspects of our program so that your child's transition from first
grade can be as positive as possible.
Homework in the second grade is a valuable part of your child's
education. Your child will be expected to always put forth her/his
best effort. In addition to reinforcing the curriculum, homework
also builds organization and study skills. Each night, when the
homework is completed, your child will ask for your signature.
Thank you for supporting your child's learning at home!
Independent reading is a continuous assignment for the year. It
is expected that students read 20 minutes every night. The intent
of this reading time is to increase vocabulary, comprehension
and the enjoyment of reading!
Each Friday your child will bring home a Friday Folder which will
include corrected papers for the week and parent notices from
the classroom, school and community. After you and your child
examine and discuss the school work, all loose papers should be
removed. Finally, your child will also ask for your signature
on the Friday Folder to signify that you have both reviewed and
discussed the folder's contents for the week. The folder should
be returned each Monday. Our partnership in monitoring your child's
assignments should help to keep you informed of your child's progress.
We are emphasizing RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY schoolwide. Please
assist us by reinforcing these lifeskills at home. Together we
are creating a safe learning environment for all students. Thank
you for your support!
Sincerely,
Mary Deakers and Mark Klinedinst

LANGUAGE ARTS-READING- Please be sure that your child reads at
home for at least 20 minutes everyday. It is important for your
child to read silently, orally, and to be read to!
WRITING- We will be working on many writing strategies this year.
It is important that your child uses complete sentences in his/her
writing. One focus will be writing paragraphs with a topic sentence,
details and conclusion. We will focus on writing stories using
characters, setting and plot. We will also learn the parts of
writing friendly letters.
