Making books is a major focus in art classes this year at McKinley. Ms. Moose is participating in the Teaching Artist Research Institute (TARI). This is a joint project with The Alameda County Office of Education, and Lois Hetland, Ph.D., Harvard School of Education, which provides professional development to District arts specialists and fourth grade teachers. The focus this year is in joining art specialists with 4th grade classroom teachers to create art that makes children excited about books and reading (and art!) The TARI program introduces the students to the Eight Studio Habits of Mind, which are:
Art classes engage students to use their imagination and develop problem-solving skills, which are quite useful in and out of the classroom! Ms. Moose has also received a $300 award from the San Leandro Art Association, which was presented to her at the San Leandro Library. She will use this award for the purchase of art supplies to complement another book project for 4th and 5th grade classes.
At McKinley, students in grades 1-5 have art class for 45 minutes one time a week. The art lessons are derived from the California State Standards, and incorporate a whole range of two-dimensional and 3-dimensional art projects, such as
Lessons are tied to literature and other current class topics. Learning the elements and principles of art provides a great foundation for art appreciation that will last a lifetime. The California Visual Arts Standards can be found here:
